Applying for Apartment in Japan from Overseas
Things to know
Yes, it is possible to apply for an apartment in Japan when you are still overseas. However, there are several things you need to know about overseas apartment application:
- Not every apartment in Japan can accept overseas application!
- Not every Japanese apartment owner/ management company can accept application from foreigners!
- Even if owner/ management company can accept application from a non-Japanese applicant, they also require the applicants to be able to speak enough Japanese (at least conversational level).
It may sound super difficult to apply for Japanese apartment from overseas, but it is not impossible! Things you need to do
Since applying for an apartment in Japan can take around 2 – 3 weeks, specially during screening process, it is highly advised to prepare as soon as possible, at least around 1 or 2 months before your planned departure in Japan. Things you need to do:
- Ask your real estate agent to give you some apartment recommendations that you can apply from overseas. Pick one as soon as possible!
- Keep in contact with your employer, real estate agent. Your agent may ask you to obtain some documents needed for application from your employer!
- Prepare all the necessary documents for application! You may obtain these from your employer. There are many other documents you must prepare when you arrive in Japan. But when you are still overseas, you can prepare your passport, and Certificate of Eligibility (Zairyū shikaku nintei shōmeisho 在留資格認定証明書).
