Hokkaido University Dormitories: Reviews & Moving Out

Finally got accepted in Hokkaido University? Congratulations! Now it is time for you to find accommodation during your stay here in Sapporo! As foreign student, you may stay in a dormitory for limited time (for less than one year most of the time). There may be a case in which there is no availability in any Hokkaido University dorm (Please check with the student affair division of your department!). In case there is no opening in any dorm, feel free to contact us so we can help you find apartment as soon as you arrive in Sapporo! Here are 9 dormitories available for Hokkaido University students (or researchers)

1) International House Kita 23 Building 1 (Male Dorm)

Occupancy: SINGLE

Rent: 
¥ 22,000/month (students)
¥ 24,000/ month (researchers)

Utilities: ¥5,000~¥25,000 /month

Facilities:

This dormitory is relatively new, but the room maybe a little bit too small, just enough for a single occupancy. You need to share bathroom and toilet with other tenants. This property is located on the north part of Hokkaido University. However, you need to walk for a little bit to reach the main campus. There is a big shopping center within 7 minutes walk from the building, so shopping should not be an issue. The nearest subway station will take around 15 minutes walk.

2) International House Kita 23 Building 2 (Female Dorm)

This dormitory is an old building with thin walls, so sounds of the neighbor’s room can leak through the walls. Also, due to the structure of the building, it is easy for mold to grow, and some rooms have a moldy smell. This property is located on the north part of Hokkaido University. However, you need to walk for a little bit to reach the main campus. There is a big shopping center within 3 minutes walk from the building, so shopping should not be an issue. The nearest subway station will take around 12 minutes walk.

4) Keiteki-Ryo (Men’s Dormitory)

This dormitory is located right within Hokkaido University (north part), so your commute to your department can be cut really short, also, the rent is super cheap! However, due to its high demand, you may not be able to apply for it if you have a financial aid or scholarship program. Going to downtown may take a while, since the nearest subway station is around 20 minutes walking! Best part of this dorm? It is fun! There are a lot of activities hosted within dormitory!

5) Sosei-Ryo (Women’s Dormitory)

Occupancy: SINGLE

This dormitory is located on strategic location, just 5 minutes walking to both the nearest subway station and Hokkaido University Kita 13 Gate. You commute to both campus and downtown is convenient!  There are a lot of convenience store nearby as well! The room maybe small, enough for single occupancy, and you need to share bathroom and toilet with other tenants.

6) Hokkaido University International House Kita 14

Occupancy: SINGLE

This accommodation was opened on September 2022, so it is still new! It takes only 5 minutes walk from the nearest subway station, and only 8 minutes walking from Hokkaido University Kita 13 gate, so commuting to both your department and downtown is convenient!

This dormitory is located right across the south-west part of Hokkaido University campus. It takes only 7 minutes walking to Soen Train station, but takes around 21 minutes walking to Sapporo Station, so your commute to downtown may take a while. The area of the building may be a little bit isolated, so there is no convenient stores visible from the place.

8) International House Fushimi

Occupancy: SINGLE (shared 3-room flat, same sex)

This accommodation was built in 2015, so it is still relatively new! The flat is quite spacious enough for 3-people to share. There are many convenient stores and supermarket within 5 minutes walking around the building area. However, commuting to Hokkaido University may be a problem; since you need to take both tram and subway to reach the campus! This dormitory is located around 4.5 km away from the campus. It takes around 45-minutes total to get from this dorm to campus (with public transportation), so keep this in mind if you decide to apply for this dormitory (or assigned to this one).

9) Sapporo International Student Center

Occupancy: SINGLE, FAMILY

This dormitory is managed by Sapporo City, so it is located quite far away from Hokkaido University campus. Despite its distance from Hokkaido University, there is a subway station right next to the main gate of the building, so commuting to Hokkaido University or downtown is not a big problem.

Moving out from dorm: Things to Prepare

Finally needs to move out from your current dormitory? Before notifying your current dorm, make sure to follow these steps to save more time!

  • Check with your current dormitory about notice period!
  • Make sure to find your apartment first!

Check notice period

Most dormitories require you to notify them 2-weeks before your desired checkout time. There may be a case in which you need to notify them as early as one month, so please confirm first with your current dormitory!

Find your new apartment!

Sometimes you are required to provide new address before you can officially notify the dormitory. So make sure to find your new apartment first. Notify your dormitory

After applying for new apartment and get the estimate of move-in date, you can notify your dormitory! Make sure to notify the dorm as early as the minimum notice period to avoid paying for extra rent! Again, please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any assistance!
