Apartments in Japan are known to be small and compact (1R or 1K). If you are a foreign student living in Japan on a budget, sometimes you end up in a small unfurnished room. But you can still turn your small room into a comfortable living space with these 3 simple tricks!
1. Bed on the corner! Furnitures next to wall!
Since you have a limited space, it is better to put bed, the biggest furniture piece, on the corner of your room on the corner, so you can have more extra space! If you are planning to live alone, a single bed should be enough for you! You also need to make sure other furniture like sofa next to wall, so you can easily move around within your small apartment.
2. Use shelf or curtain to isolate your bed
Bed is the most important piece of your bedroom, your spend around half of your day on the bed sleeping at night. It is in our primal instinct to sleep in a small space hidden from outside world. You can use either a shelf or curtain to separate your bed, turning your bed into a comfy sleeping space!
3. Lighting and decoration
Decoration and lighting are like salt and pepper to your meal. Without any spice, your meal will taste bland and it will be less joyful to eat them. Some decorations you can find in nearby 100 yen shops include:

- Small lamps
- Wall decorations
