How to Dispose Oversized Trash (Electronics, Appliances, Furniture) in Sapporo, Japan

Disposing big items in Japan such as electronics, appliances, and furniture needs to follow a certain procedure. No, putting them next to garbage bin in front of your apartment is ILLEGAL! Every area in Japan has its own rules when it comes to big items disposal. Here are 5 steps to dispose big items legally in Sapporo City, Hokkaido, Japan. 

1) Identify your big trash

Items that will NOT be collected by Sapporo City. TV, Fridge, Washing Machine, Air Conditioners, Laptop, will not be collected!
Items that can be collected by Sapporo City. Bicycles, Furniture (sofa, tables, chairs), Speakers, Lamp, Microwave, Luggage Bags, Guitar, Ski Equipment, Sofa, Heater, Golf Equipment can be collected

2) Call Sapporo Garbage Collection Center (011-281-8153)

Only available from 9:00 ~ 16:30, and may only be available in Japanese
  1. Identify what items you want to dispose

  2. Operators will then tell you which stickers to buy and 4-digit code that needs to be written on the sticker.

3) Buy Big Trash Stickers!

Make sure you buy the right one!
  • You can buy this sticker in your local convenience stores.

  • In case you need to know how to say the sticker name in Japanese, it is pronounced, Oogata gomi shori shiiru

4) Put the sticker on the item
(with the 4-digit code)

5)Take the item to garbage station

You need to carry the item downstairs to your apartment/ accommodation designated garbage station before the appointed collection day (may vary depending on your area).
